Elmhurst Park District: Great Western Prairie Work Day

September 10 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Dear Friends of Elmhurst Great Western Prairie,

Just a brief note regarding the two volunteer days on the miniature wilderness that is the Elmhurst Great Western Prairie.

First, we have rescheduled the special called work day from September 3 to Saturday, September 10. I made an error and neglected to recognize that September 3 is during Labor Day Weekend. So, we will NOT be working this Saturday September 3 but the following Saturday, September 10 from 9:00 until noon.

The plan for the special workday Saturday, September 10 is a very fun activity with the goal of stemming the invasion of Teasel between Salt Creek and Rt. 83. We will be cutting off the maturing seedheads, bagging them up and removing them from the site. This is much easier than removing the entire plant.

What to bring for this workday:
As always, wear long sleeves and long pants.
Work gloves if you have them.
Hand held garden clippers. Please, bring them if you have them as we may not have enough.
Water to share!
Important: As we will be working at the western extreme of the EGWP, we will be meeting at Rex and the Illinois Prairie Path rather than at Berkley Ave. This is four blocks west of Berkley.

As for our regularly scheduled workday on Saturday, September 17, we will continue the removal of the sumac jungle halfway between Spring Road and Berkley Ave, 9:00 until noon.

I’ll send out my usual, more detailed email early next week, but wanted to get this word out early to you.

Best to you all!
