The Wheelmen: Bicycling in America 1819-1933 – Glen Ellyn

A history presentation by Carey Williams and a Preview of the 2016 National Wheel Meet Events in July 2016.  Carey Williams is the Chicago representative of The Wheelmen.  He is demonstrating his riding skills in the photo below!

The Wheelmen is a national, non-profit organization dedicated to keeping alive the heritage of American cycling, promoting the restoration and riding of early cycles manufactured prior to 1918, and encouraging cycling as part of modern living.  This organization follows bicycle development with such types as the Draissine, Velocipede, Boneshaker, Ordinary (also known as a High Wheeler of Penny Farthing), Tricycle, High Wheel Safety, Hard Tired Safety, Cushion Tire Safety and Pneumatic Safety (including Tandems and Chainless models).  Many of these antique bicycles were instrumental The Good Roads Movement from which American has benefited to this day.

The Wheelmen will be coming to the West Suburbs (primarily Elmhurst College) in July for their 2016 National Wheelmen Meet celebrating 150 years of cycling in America.  They have a very interesting and comprehensive agenda including demonstration & drill team formation riding a Century Run (Ride0 on the Prairie Path; the public is welcome to participate.

The Elmhurst Bicycle Club and the Illinois Prairie Path will be in attendance!
